North Las Vegas is a very dog friendly city. Unfortunately, not all dogs in the city are friendly. Dogs can be very unpredictable and while one minute they may be sitting nicely accepting pets, their behavior can drastically change. Sometimes, dogs can even seriously bite and attack people. When they do, victims can sustain the most serious of injuries. While there are no specific laws regarding dog bites in Nevada, it is possible to hold dog owners liable when their pet hurts someone. Our North Las Vegas dog bite lawyer can help you prove your case.

What are the Laws on Dog Bites in Nevada?

The Nevada statutes do not specifically refer to dog bites. As such, dog owners can typically only be held liable when the animal has shown previous signs of aggressive or violent tendencies. It is presumed that if a dog has bitten someone before, the owner should know that the animal has the potential to become aggressive or violent toward other people. When a dog owner fails to take the necessary safety measures to prevent their animal from biting anyone else, they can be held liable. Safety measures can include keeping the dog on a leash or confining it when on private property.

It is also important to note that under the comparative negligence laws of the state, dog bite victims may also be found partially to blame for their own injuries. If, for example, someone provoked a dog into biting them, they would be found partly at fault. In North Las Vegas, as throughout the rest of Nevada, victims can only file a claim for compensation if they are less than 51 percent to blame for their injuries.

What to Do After a Dog Bite

Of course, the first step to take after being bitten or attacked by a dog is to receive medical treatment for your injuries. Dog bites can result in serious injuries including puncture wounds, crushing injuries, broken bones, and more. Due to the fact that a dog’s mouth is full of bacteria, these injuries can also become seriously infected and cause further complications. Receiving treatment will help mitigate the injuries and document your injuries, which can prove the nature and severity of them to the insurance company.

All dog bites must also be reported to the Animal Protection Services division of the City of North Las Vegas. Once reported, the animal will be kept in isolation for ten days to make sure it is not diseased or rabid. After the first bite, the dog will be deemed dangerous and the owner is expected to take precautionary measures to make sure the dog does not bite again.

It is not against the law to keep dangerous dogs in North Las Vegas. If the dog bites again, though, the dog will be classified as vicious. Vicious dogs are not permitted within the city limits and so, the dog may be euthanized if it bites or attacks again.
